Sydney Marathon (September)

What’s it about: The Sydney Marathon is an iconic athletic event and is an annual legacy event of the 2000 Olympics. In 2025, the Sydney Marathon became part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, joining global icons like Boston, London, and New York City. It features races over 42.2 km, 10 km, and 5 km. Organisers expect around 35,000 runners and more than 300,000 spectators.

Dates and locations:

• Saturday, 30 August 2025 — Mini Marathon 5 km at 7:30 am, start Macquarie St (CBD), finish Sydney Opera House.
• Sunday, 31 August 2025 — Marathon 42.195 km starts 6:30 am from Miller St, North Sydney to Sydney Opera House; Marathon 10 km starts 8:45 am from Miller St to Conservatorium of Music.

Granny Smith Festival (Eastwood) — Third Saturday in October

What’s it about: Known as one of Sydney’s most beloved community events, the Granny Smith Festival is held annually around mid-October in Eastwood. The Granny Smith Festival celebrates the birthplace of the famous green apple, first cultivated in Eastwood in 1868 by Maria Ann “Granny” Smith. Now in its 40th year, the festival will feature a parade, fireworks, live entertainment, rides, and stalls. The event draws over 80,000 visitors each year. 

Dates: Third Saturday in October (18 October 2025)

The event is aimed at CBD workers, students, families, and curious members of the public.  In 2024, the free program drew around 190,000 attendees, with a similar turnout expected in 2025.

What’s it about:  Sculpture by the Sea is the world’s largest annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Originally a one-day event, it has since grown into a major cultural fixture.  The event transforms the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk in Sydney into a free public art gallery. 

The event features around 100 large-scale works from Australian and international artists. Today, it draws more than 500,000 visitors each year, making it one of Sydney’s most popular events.

Location and Dates: It will run from 17 October to 3 November 2025 along the Bondi and Tamarama coastal walk.

Admission/Price: Free. Sculpture by the Sea is open to the public along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk, with no ticket required.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Art Gallery of New South Wales
