Parking near Darwin Festival
Every year. the month of August is an exciting period for the residents and visitors of Darwin City in the Northern Territory (NT) because of the Darwin Festival. The 18-day celebration held yearly at the Frog Hollow Centre for the Arts, situated at 56 McMinn Street, celebrates multiculturalism, theatre, music, dance, visual art, cabaret and food.
According to the festival’s official website, the Darwin Festival is “Australia’s most northern and only tropical arts festival.” The history behind this celebration is a story of resilience. In 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated most of the city, killing 68 people and rendering 25,000 residents homeless. Some residents left the city to start a new life somewhere, but others chose to stay and decided to rebuild everything from the rubble.
In 1977, Dr. Charles Gurd, NT’s Director of Health at the time, presented a plan to celebrate the town’s revival to raise morale among the citizens who suffered the tragedy. At present, Darwin residents and visitors from all over Australia and the world still celebrate the amazing story of hope and the community arts.
The festival grows bigger every year, attracting more and more visitors and performers. In 2017, a total of 599 artists took the stage, 318 of which are local NT artists. A total of 99,828 attendees graced the festival, an increase from the 70,000 visitors in 2016. The number of participants is expected to further increase in the coming years.
The list of activities ensures that everyone, no matter the age, race, culture, and religion, will have the time of their lives during the event. Darwin Festival is indeed all about spreading optimism that stems from the first celebration back in 1977.
